Costs Negotiator

About the role

The Costs Negotiator will manage the settlement of legal costs for a range of motor and casualty claims. Working within the Costs Motor & Casualty team, you will review cases, devise cost strategies, and negotiate settlements with opponents and insurers.

Key responsibilities

• Proactively review each case to develop an initial costs strategy and settlement parameters.
• Prepare points of dispute, assess strengths and weaknesses, and document them.
• Negotiate settlements via telephone, presenting meritorious arguments.
• Update clients on progress and ensure correspondence meets SLA requirements.
• Instruct counsel, attend conferences, detailed assessment hearings, and mediations both remotely and in person.
• Attend court for application hearings and conduct own advocacy when required.
• Deliver performance targets, quality standards, and client KPIs.
• Delegate tasks to a paralegal and support their technical development.
• Maintain compliance with SRA Standards & Regulations.

Required profile

• Minimum 12 months experience in a costs negotiator role, either for claimant or defendant.
• Strong oral communication and concise written skills.
• Ability to build relationships across the Costs team, wider business, and clients.
• Commitment to meeting client SLAs, KPIs, and quality standards.
