Countryside Officer – Cannock Chase Country Park

About the role

The Countryside Officer will manage and protect the 1,300 ha Cannock Chase Country Park, a site of national importance for wildlife and heritage. Working full‑time on‑site, you will lead stewardship projects, ensure visitor safety and coordinate volunteers and contractors to maintain the heath and woodland.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and deliver parts of the Higher‑Level Stewardship Scheme to improve habitat condition.
• Conduct regular site safety checks and arrange remedial work.
• Remove hazardous trees, apply for SSSI assent, and oversee contractor activities.
• Organise and run volunteer work parties and carry out routine site repairs.

Required profile

• Degree or equivalent in countryside management or a related discipline.
• At least two of the listed NPTC Level 2 qualifications (e.g., chainsaw use, off‑road driving, pesticide application).
• Proven experience of practical site management, health & safety procedures and conservation surveys.
• Current manual driving licence with ability to operate off‑road vehicles.
• Physical fitness for outdoor work in all weather conditions.
