Departmental Manager – Utilities & Electrical Engineering

About the role

This permanent Departmental Manager position supports Tata Steel’s Trostre works in Llanelli, overseeing utilities, site infrastructure and electrical engineering services for a heavy‑manufacturing environment. The role combines technical leadership with budget control and compliance responsibilities.

Key responsibilities

• Manage day‑to‑day operation of utilities, infrastructure and site‑wide electrical engineering resources.
• Implement and maintain health, safety, environmental and COMAH compliance systems.
• Lead cross‑functional engineering teams, including central electrical, site services and IT/PC&A groups.
• Control expenditure on spares, materials and labour to stay within budget.
• Champion the Management of Change (MoC) process and ensure risk‑based assessments for plant modifications.
• Uphold Trostre engineering standards and represent the site on UK reliability and sustainability committees.

Required profile

• Engineering degree or equivalent (e.g., HNC/Diploma) with extensive heavy‑manufacturing experience.
• Proven experience managing site electrical services, high‑voltage systems and IT/process‑control teams.
• Strong knowledge of reliability engineering, failure analysis and engineering budget control.
• Excellent leadership, communication and interpersonal skills under pressure.
• Chartered Engineer status or active pursuit is desirable, along with IET/NEBOSH certifications.
