Deputy Editor – Big Read

About the role

The Deputy Editor, Big Read will help shape the FT’s flagship long‑form feature series, delivering agenda‑setting journalism that appears six times a week on the app and home page. Working closely with writers, visual storytellers and other desks, you will ensure each piece is authoritative, engaging and legally sound.

Key responsibilities

• Generate and commission a diverse slate of feature ideas that align with the FT’s core priorities and explore innovative formats.
• Edit long‑form articles on tight deadlines, collaborating with writers to produce sparkling, legally watertight copy.
• Lead the Big Read desk in the editor’s absence and represent the team in editorial meetings and news conferences.
• Develop and manage special projects that showcase FT journalism.
• Partner with the visual storytelling team and other desks to integrate graphics and visual elements.

Required profile

• A strong news instinct and ability to spot topics that make compelling big reads.
• Proven experience editing long‑form pieces across tech, business, finance, science and economics.
• Confidence to debate ideas with senior editors and distill pitches into memorable angles.
• Diplomacy to collaborate with reporters and editors across multiple desks.
• Aptitude for visual storytelling and creative use of graphics.
• Ability to thrive under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
