Deputy General Counsel

About the role

This is a senior legal position within a purpose‑led financial services organisation based in the West Midlands. The role works hybrid, with two days a week in the Birmingham office, and reports directly to the Board and Executive Leadership Team.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic and pragmatic legal advice to the Board, Executive Leadership Team and senior stakeholders on regulatory, governance and commercial matters.
• Identify, monitor and manage legal risk, keeping abreast of regulatory developments and their impact.
• Advise on FCA and PRA requirements, the Building Societies Act, Consumer Duty, mortgage lending, savings products, operational resilience and related legislation.
• Lead legal support for major commercial contracts, supplier arrangements, procurement, strategic projects and contentious matters.
• Support corporate governance activities and provide leadership to the legal and secretariat function.

Required profile

• Qualified solicitor, barrister or equivalent with extensive experience in regulated financial services, either in‑house or in private practice.
• Proven expertise advising on FCA and PRA regulations, the Building Societies Act and Consumer Duty.
• Comfortable briefing Boards and senior executives on complex, commercially significant issues.
• Strong background in commercial contracts, corporate governance, legal risk management and regulatory compliance.
• Excellent drafting, negotiation and stakeholder management skills, with experience leading teams and external counsel.
