Design Engineer – Hazard Protection

About the role

Rolls‑Royce SMR is seeking a Design Engineer to join the Hazard Protection capability within the Reactor Plant Systems function. You will help create engineering solutions that safeguard the nuclear power station from internal and external hazards, ensuring that protection measures are robust, proportionate, and fully integrated into the plant design.

Key responsibilities

• Develop hazard‑informed design concepts for structures, systems and components.
• Support engineering optioneering, trade‑off studies and design decision‑making.
• Define, manage and allocate hazard protection and Service Condition Control Measure (SCCM) requirements.
• Collaborate across civil, structural, architectural, systems, safety, C&I and human‑factors disciplines to ensure integrated, deliverable designs.
• Produce high‑quality engineering outputs, including design definitions and substantiation.
• Participate in technical workshops, interface management and design integration activities.
• Identify and manage technical risks, assumptions, issues and dependencies.
• Apply governance, configuration control and design assurance processes, and support regulatory and licensing interactions.

Required profile

• Experience delivering engineering work in a regulated or high‑hazard environment.
• Relevant engineering degree or equivalent practical experience.
• Awareness of internal and external hazards and their impact on plant design.
• Understanding of systems engineering principles and requirements management.
• Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
• Strong communication and stakeholder‑engagement skills.
• Proactive, collaborative mindset and comfort with ambiguity.
