Development Underwriter

About the role

We are partnering with a well‑established insurer to recruit a Development Underwriter for its Commercial Lines team. The role blends hybrid working with regular broker visits across Yorkshire and the North East, supporting the growth of the Mid‑Market portfolio.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and maintain strong broker relationships across a defined Mid‑Market panel, including training, social engagement and performance reviews.
• Underwrite and manage commercial risks profitably, both remotely and during face‑to‑face broker meetings.
• Build and sustain a new‑business pipeline, using trading tools to achieve competitive placement.
• Promote the insurer’s Mid‑Market, SME and Schemes propositions through regular broker engagement.
• Support retention, rate improvement and regional performance targets.
• Ensure accurate and compliant documentation within internal systems.
• Keep up‑to‑date with market trends, broker behaviour and relevant legal or regulatory developments.
• Contribute to continuous improvement and operational efficiency within the Mid‑Market space.

Required profile

• Proven ability to build and nurture broker partnerships.
• Strong underwriting experience with complex, high‑value commercial risks.
• Analytical, commercially‑minded approach to portfolio management.
• Track record of meeting financial and performance targets.
• Excellent communication, negotiation and presentation skills.
• Self‑motivated, proactive and able to work independently and collaboratively.
• Previous insurance experience (essential).
