Director of Communications

About the role

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) is seeking an exceptional Director of Communications to lead a modern, high‑performing communications function. Reporting to the Executive Director of Communications and Public Affairs and sitting on the Senior Leadership Team, you will shape the strategic vision for communications across the regulator.

Key responsibilities

• Set and lead the ICO’s communications strategy aligned with regulatory objectives and corporate priorities.
• Position communications as a strategic asset to influence behaviour, support compliance and reinforce the ICO’s authority.
• Provide senior counsel on reputational, sensitive and high‑profile issues, including crisis readiness.
• Lead an integrated in‑house team of around 30 staff covering media, digital, social, strategic communications and engagement.
• Advise the Executive Team on how to explain the ICO’s role, decisions and regulatory actions to build trust and understanding.

Required profile

• Proven senior leadership experience in communications, preferably within a public‑sector or regulatory environment.
• Strong track record of influencing senior stakeholders and shaping high‑profile narratives.
• Excellent judgment on sensitive issues and crisis communication.
• Ability to embed communications early in organisational decision‑making.
