Director of Engineering - Payments

About the role

ClearBank is looking for a senior technology leader to own the technical strategy and delivery of its UK‑focused payments capabilities. You will guide a set of established engineering teams, shape the long‑term roadmap with product partners, and ensure the platform scales to meet evolving client needs.

Key responsibilities

• Define and execute the technology strategy for UK Payments, aligning it with ClearBank’s broader platform vision.
• Partner with the Head of Product to create a credible near‑term and long‑term roadmap.
• Provide senior oversight of engineering delivery, ensuring resilience, scalability, security and operational readiness.
• Guide architectural decisions, maintain standards, and ensure seamless integration with other ClearBank services.
• Lead, coach and develop engineers and engineering managers, fostering a culture of ownership and continuous learning.
• Work closely with Risk, Compliance and Legal to operate within regulatory frameworks and communicate progress to senior stakeholders.

Required profile

• Senior technology leadership experience (Director or equivalent) in payments, financial services or a regulated domain.
• Proven track record of owning and evolving complex, high‑throughput platforms.
• Strong understanding of payments ecosystems, with ability to shape strategy and challenge technical decisions.
• Experience partnering with product leadership to deliver long‑term technical roadmaps.
• Pragmatic, outcome‑focused mindset with excellent communication skills for both technical and non‑technical audiences.
