Director of Music (Maternity Cover)

About the role

The University of Oxford is seeking a Director of Music on a maternity‑cover basis to shape the musical life of Hertford College. This part‑time, fixed‑term position involves leading both chapel music and the activities of the Hertford College Music Society.

Key responsibilities

• Provide music for chapel services, including supervising organ scholars and directing the choral contribution to worship.
• Conduct and direct the non‑auditioning HCMS orchestra.
• Support the organisation of termly concerts and weekly evening recitals in the chapel.
• Oversee extracurricular musical activities and promote new initiatives that broaden participation across the college.
• Maintain the long‑term vision for music within the college.

Required profile

• Demonstrated ability to lead chapel music and student ensembles.
• Experience supervising organ scholars and coordinating choral worship.
• Proven track record of organising concerts and recitals in an academic setting.

Required skills

• Conducting and orchestral direction.
