Director of Portfolio Management

About the role

The NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) is seeking a senior strategic leader to head its Portfolio Management Directorate. Reporting to the Chief Portfolio Officer, you will shape the governance, prioritisation and delivery of a national portfolio of transformation programmes that affect millions of citizens and NHS staff.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic leadership for enterprise‑wide portfolio management, ensuring effective planning, prioritisation, governance, assurance and reporting across a complex portfolio of change programmes.
• Define and communicate a clear vision for the Portfolio Management Directorate, aligning teams and stakeholders around shared objectives.
• Oversee investment decision‑making, ensuring funding allocations align with NHSBSA strategic priorities and deliver value for taxpayers.
• Lead governance processes, risk management and performance monitoring to guarantee successful delivery of transformation initiatives.
• Collaborate with fellow Directors and senior leaders to shape overall organisational strategy and manage organisational risk.

Required profile

• Proven senior leadership experience in portfolio, programme or change management within large, complex organisations.
• Demonstrated ability to influence senior stakeholders and drive transformation at national scale.
• Strong understanding of public‑sector funding flows and healthcare service delivery.
• Excellent strategic thinking, governance and decision‑making capabilities.
