Domestic Assistant – Night Shift

About the role

We are seeking a Domestic Assistant to join the night‑shift cleaning team at The Balfour, NHS Orkney’s main hospital. Working from 7.30 pm to 6.30 am on a 3‑days‑on/3‑days‑off rota, you will help maintain a clean and safe environment for patients, staff and visitors.

Key responsibilities

• Perform routine cleaning of patient areas, wards, bathrooms and communal spaces in line with the NHS National Cleaning Specification.
• Collect and dispose of waste, manage linen and supply replenishment.
• Report any hazards, maintenance issues or infection‑control concerns to the appropriate team.
• Work collaboratively with other domestic staff to ensure coverage throughout the night shift.

Required profile

• Previous experience in a cleaning or domestic role, preferably in a healthcare setting.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Commitment to confidentiality and to up‑holding health‑and‑safety standards.
• Eligibility to reside and work in the UK for the duration of the contract.

Required skills

• Familiarity with COSHH regulations and basic infection‑control practices (training will be provided).
