Embedded C Software Engineer - Development

About the role

We are a world‑leading defence organisation recruiting an Embedded C Software Engineer for a six‑month contract at our Development Facility in Stevenage. The role focuses on safety‑critical, real‑time software for the next generation of missile systems, offering a hybrid/on‑site working pattern with a four‑day week.

Key responsibilities

• Architect, design, implement and test on‑board software for missile subsystems.
• Develop bare‑metal embedded applications in C/C++ throughout the full software lifecycle.
• Produce and maintain specifications, design documents and test artefacts to meet safety integrity requirements.
• Debug complex issues and support verification activities in a lab environment.

Required profile

• Strong ability to analyse and debug complex embedded problems.
• Experience authoring specifications and test documentation for safety‑critical systems.
• Proficiency with source configuration control tools such as PVCS, RTC or GIT.
• Capability to work with minimal supervision and use formal requirements capture tools.

Required skills

• C and C++ programming for bare‑metal embedded systems.
• Development at high safety integrity levels (SIL4 / DO‑178C Level B).
• Requirements management in IBM DOORS.
• Unit testing with LDRA, RAPITA, CPPUnit or equivalent.
• Code coverage analysis and reporting.
• Use of laboratory equipment (power supplies, oscilloscopes, logic analysers).

• Rate of £70 per hour, inside IR35 (umbrella).
• 37‑hour week with overtime paid at time‑and‑a‑quarter.
• Four‑day work week (Monday‑Thursday) and hybrid/remote flexibility.
