Energy Support Officer

About the role

The Energy Support Officer will provide practical energy advice to households in Reading Borough Council’s housing stock, helping residents reduce fuel costs and improve home comfort. The role involves assessing homes, offering guidance on energy‑saving measures, and supporting residents through the Energy Support Framework.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct energy‑efficiency assessments of homes and recommend conservation measures.
• Advise residents on practical improvements and negotiate with energy suppliers when needed.
• Visit properties, prepare correspondence and maintain high‑quality case records in compliance with GDPR.
• Promote the service alongside the Communications Team, creating marketing materials, press releases and leaflets.
• Contribute articles for council publications and ensure administrative functions meet framework standards.
• Respond to customer enquiries within defined timescales and maintain a professional, courteous approach.
• Assess damp and mould issues, provide advice and refer complex repairs to the appropriate teams.
• Support and attend community events, representing the service and raising awareness.

Required profile

• Strong interest in energy efficiency and willingness to learn relevant legislation.
• Excellent written communication skills for letters, reports and promotional content.
• Ability to maintain accurate records and work with IT systems while respecting data protection rules.
• Customer‑focused attitude with the capacity to handle enquiries promptly.
• Basic understanding of benefit eligibility, health and safety regulations, or readiness to acquire this knowledge.
