Environmental Protection Officer (Planning)

About the role

The Environmental Protection Officer (Planning) will promote and, where appropriate, enforce environmental protection across the district. This role safeguards public health and the environment while supporting sustainable economic growth.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out reactive and proactive interventions including advice, inspections, investigations, audits, surveillance and environmental impact assessments for proposed developments or licence applications.
• Lead compliance initiatives through business education programmes and accreditation schemes, aiming to achieve compliance without enforcement.
• Promote the council’s services and support staff training and peer‑review activities.
• Represent the service on project teams, specialist sub‑groups and multi‑agency task forces.
• Supervise external contractors engaged by the service.
• Collaborate with planning, building control, housing benefits and other agencies to deliver coordinated enforcement actions.
• Provide on‑call and emergency advice, including telephone support outside normal working hours.

Required profile

• At least a first‑degree level qualification in a relevant discipline or equivalent experience.
• Full membership of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health.
• Qualified environmental health practitioner status.
