Estimator – Civil Engineering & Infrastructure

About the role

We are supporting a well‑established contractor in South Yorkshire/West Leeds to strengthen their commercial team. The Estimator will play a key role in the pre‑construction process, delivering accurate cost plans, tender submissions and pricing strategies for complex civil engineering, infrastructure and rail projects.

Key responsibilities

• Produce detailed cost plans and competitive tender submissions for a broad range of infrastructure projects.
• Build estimates using first‑principles pricing, incorporating labour, plant, materials, subcontractor packages and logistics.
• Carry out quantity take‑offs from engineering drawings and specifications using digital and manual methods.
• Review contract documents, bills of quantities and technical specifications to ensure accurate scope understanding.
• Obtain and assess quotations from subcontractors and suppliers to support robust tender submissions.
• Identify commercial, technical and programme risks and contribute to risk mitigation planning.

Required profile

• HNC/HND/Degree in Civil Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Construction Management or related discipline (equivalent experience considered).
• Proven experience preparing estimates within civil engineering, rail or multidisciplinary construction environments.
• Strong understanding of first‑principles estimating and resource‑based pricing methodologies.
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications and contract documentation confidently.

Required skills

• Proficient in Microsoft Excel.
• Experience with relevant estimating software packages.
