Executive Director of Children, Education & Services

About the role

The Executive Director of Children and Education will lead the newly formed East Surrey Council's children’s services, shaping strategy, culture and outcomes for children, young people and families. Reporting to the Chief Executive, this senior role will help build a new unitary authority from the ground up.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic and statutory leadership across children's social care, safeguarding, education, SEND, family help and early intervention.
• Develop an integrated, prevention‑focused system that improves life chances and reduces inequalities.
• Build strong partnerships with schools, academy trusts, colleges, health organisations, police and voluntary sector partners.
• Maintain robust safeguarding arrangements, regulatory confidence and inspection readiness.
• Lead large‑scale transformation and establish a culture of inclusion, collaboration and continuous improvement.

Required profile

• Extensive senior leadership experience in children’s services, education or a related public service environment.
• Proven track record of improving outcomes for children and young people and managing significant resources.
• Politically astute with the ability to build trusted relationships with elected members, partners and regulators.
• Commitment to co‑production, participation and placing children’s voices at the centre of decision‑making.
