Experienced Archaeologist – Fieldwork (Needham Market)

About the role

Cotswold Archaeology is seeking an Experienced Archaeologist to undertake field investigations, including manual excavation, data collection and recording, under the direction of a Project Leader. The role involves working on a variety of archaeological projects across different periods, with the possibility of away assignments that include accommodation and subsistence.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out fieldwalking, evaluation, excavation, finds processing, data entry and archiving.
• Record investigation data using pro‑forma sheets, scale drawings, photographs and GPS equipment.
• Recover artefacts and environmental samples following company procedures.
• Supervise machine excavation, conduct watching briefs and perform survey duties.
• Mentor and train less‑experienced staff and contribute to departmental learning reports.

Required profile

• Demonstrable commercial field archaeology experience within a professional British practice.
• Proven ability to conduct rapid manual excavation and produce accurate stratigraphic matrices.
• Full manual driving licence with experience driving 4x4 vehicles, vans and minibuses.
• Willingness to undertake away work, including extended periods when required.
• Strong knowledge of archaeological periods and practice, and ability to engage courteously with sponsors, clients and the public.

Required skills

• Operation of Leica GPS equipment for surveying.
• Machine supervision of excavation equipment.
• Preparation of stratigraphic matrices of moderate complexity.
• Driving 4x4 vehicles, vans and minibuses.
