External Examiner – BTEC Higher Nationals Construction

About the role

The External Examiner will ensure that Pearson’s BTEC Higher National Construction programmes meet national standards. You will support centres through sampling, reporting and remedial actions, and work closely with the Senior External Examiner.

Key responsibilities

• Undertake sampling of assessed student work to verify compliance with Pearson standards.
• Provide support and development to centres during the sampling process.
• Produce detailed reports on sampling outcomes and recommend actions.
• Apply appropriate sanctions in consultation with team leaders when standards are not met.
• Facilitate the Senior External Examiner in sourcing training and standardisation materials.
• Report back to Pearson and centres within agreed service‑level agreements.

Required profile

• Significant experience delivering and assessing BTEC Higher National qualifications in Construction.
• At least a Level 6 qualification and a full, relevant competence qualification for the sector.
• Annual participation in online training and standardisation activities.
• Evidence of recent CPD in the sector (desirable).
• Willingness to use technology‑based communication and centre support (desirable).

Required skills

• Intermediate Excel proficiency.
