Field Interviewer – Galashiels

About the role

Join NatCen’s social research team as a Field Interviewer in the Galashiels area. You will visit households to gather first‑hand insights on topics such as health, housing and transport, helping shape policies that improve everyday life in Britain.

Key responsibilities

• Visit households in the Galashiels area to conduct research interviews on health, housing, transport and related subjects.
• Use a tablet or laptop to guide conversations, record responses and ensure data quality.
• Knock on doors, manage appointments, and handle refusals or non‑responses professionally.
• Submit interview data promptly and keep accurate records of each visit.

Required profile

• Valid UK driving licence and sole use of a car.
• Class 1 business insurance for the vehicle.
• Right to work in the UK and willingness to complete a DBS check.
• Reliable home broadband and a laptop or tablet with a camera.
• Minimum 18 hours availability per week, with flexibility for weekdays, evenings and weekends.
• Strong verbal and written English.

Required skills

• Comfortable using basic technology (tablet, laptop, video‑call software).

What we offer

• £20‑£30 per completed interview, plus admin fees, holiday pay and travel compensation.
• Travel time paid at £4.68 per hour and mileage at 36p per mile (up to 10,000 miles).
• Performance bonuses (£250 after launch and at two‑ and four‑month milestones).
• Average hourly rate around £15.12, higher for experienced interviewers.
