Field Interviewer – Part‑time (Chelmsford area)

About the role

Join NatCen Social Research as a part‑time Field Interviewer, visiting households in the Chelmsford area to collect vital data on health, housing, transport and other public‑interest topics. You’ll work independently, using a tablet or laptop to guide conversations and record real‑world experiences.

Key responsibilities

• Knock on doors and conduct face‑to‑face research interviews in participants’ homes.
• Use a tablet or laptop with camera to capture responses accurately.
• Follow interview protocols, obtain consent and ensure data quality.
• Manage your own schedule, travel to assigned locations and report progress.
• Maintain confidentiality and comply with DBS and data‑protection requirements.

Required profile

• Valid UK driving licence and sole use of a car.
• Class 1 business insurance for the vehicle.
• Right to work in the UK and willingness to complete a DBS check.
• Reliable home broadband and a laptop or tablet with camera.
• At least 18 hours per week availability, with flexibility for evenings and weekends.
• Strong verbal and written English communication skills.

What we offer

• £20‑£30 per interview (average hourly rate £15.12 including holiday pay).
• Admin fees, holiday pay (12.1%) and travel time compensation (£4.68 / hour).
• Mileage reimbursement at 36p per mile (up to 10,000 miles).
• Performance bonuses: £250 after launch, then additional £250 at two‑ and four‑month milestones.
• Flexible part‑time hours to fit around other commitments.
