Finance Manager

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Finance Manager to join a well‑established independent school. Reporting to the Bursar, you will lead the day‑to‑day finance function, deliver high‑quality reporting and provide strategic financial support.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare monthly management accounts with variance analysis and commentary.
• Support budgeting, forecasting and long‑term financial planning.
• Produce financial reports for senior leadership and governing bodies.
• Lead the year‑end process and assist external auditors.
• Manage group reporting requirements and meet reporting deadlines.
• Oversee purchase ledger, sales ledger, fee billing, credit control, banking and reconciliations.
• Take responsibility for payroll, pensions and HMRC compliance.
• Maintain robust financial controls and ensure regulatory compliance.
• Lead and develop the finance team.
• Drive continuous improvement of finance systems, processes and reporting.
• Build strong relationships across the organisation and advise non‑finance stakeholders.

Required profile

• ACA, ACCA or CIMA qualification (or part‑qualified).
• Previous experience in a Finance Manager or similar leadership role.
• Strong management accounting, budgeting and forecasting experience.
• Payroll management experience and good understanding of HMRC compliance.
• Excellent analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
• Ability to communicate financial information clearly to non‑finance colleagues.
• Experience leading, developing and motivating a finance team.
• Proactive, continuous‑improvement mindset.
• Experience in the education sector is advantageous but not essential.
