Financial Controller (Portishead, Bristol)

About the role

Osprey Shipping is seeking a proactive, commercially‑aware Financial Controller to lead the finance function for its Portishead operations. Reporting to the Finance Director, you will be responsible for accurate financial reporting, strong controls and delivering insight that supports strategic decision‑making.

Key responsibilities

• Lead, mentor and develop the finance team, fostering a high‑performance culture.
• Oversee day‑to‑day finance operations including accounts payable, receivable, general ledger, payroll and cash management.
• Prepare and deliver monthly management accounts, forecasts and financial reports with clear performance analysis.
• Maintain robust balance‑sheet controls, financial governance and internal control processes.
• Own and optimise finance systems, driving automation and scalability using Sage Intacct and related platforms.
• Manage cash flow, working capital and multi‑currency banking arrangements to support growth and capital investment.
• Lead the annual budgeting and forecasting process in partnership with business leaders.
• Coordinate statutory reporting, audits, HMRC submissions, VAT returns and tax compliance.
• Provide commercial finance support to operational and project teams, delivering insights that improve profitability and cost control.

Required profile

• Fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent) or equivalent experience.
• Proven experience in a Financial Controller, Finance Manager or senior finance leadership role.
• Strong technical accounting knowledge, including preparation of management and statutory accounts.
• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills with the ability to analyse complex financial data.
• Experience using ERP and accounting systems, preferably Sage Intacct or similar.
• Demonstrated ability in budgeting, forecasting and cash‑flow management.
