About the role

The British Antarctic Survey is seeking a qualified Fourth Engineer to join the engineering team aboard the RRS Sir David Attenborough. You will support the Polar Chief Engineer and Second Engineer Officer in maintaining the vessel’s plant and machinery during worldwide deployments, including Antarctic missions.

Key responsibilities

  • Manage engine‑room watch and UMS duty watch, ensuring safe operation of all machinery.
  • Carry out planned maintenance tasks using the PMS and record all work accurately.
  • Oversee fuel‑oil and lube‑oil purifiers, bunkering operations, and internal fuel transfers.
  • Maintain the Oil Record Book under supervision.
  • Report defects, recommend spare parts, and assist with ship winterisation procedures.
  • Support the implementation of BAS Permit‑to‑Work systems and comply with all safety regulations.

Required profile

  • Valid Seafarer Medical Certificate (ENG1) without restrictions.
  • UK Engineer Officer of the Watch (Motor) Certificate of Competency or equivalent.
  • Completion of the four elements of STCW basic training (PST, FPFF, EFA, PSSR).
  • STCW Advanced Fire Fighting certification.
  • STCW Proficiency in Medical First Aid.

Required skills

  • Proficiency with Planned Maintenance System (PMS) for recording maintenance activities.
  • Knowledge of fuel‑oil and lube‑oil purification systems.
  • Ability to maintain and audit the Oil Record Book.
  • Understanding of ship bunkering and internal fuel transfer procedures.
  • Familiarity with Permit‑to‑Work processes on polar vessels.
