Functional Skills English Tutor – HMP Belmarsh

About the role

We are seeking a passionate Functional Skills English Tutor to join the education team at HMP Belmarsh in London. You will deliver City & Guilds Functional Skills English qualifications to adult learners, helping them rebuild confidence and improve employability.

Key responsibilities

• Plan and deliver interactive Functional Skills English lessons for small groups (up to 12 learners).
• Conduct initial assessments using BKSB diagnostic tools and create Individual Learning Plans.
• Utilise adaptive teaching methods and digital resources to engage learners.
• Prepare learners for City & Guilds assessments and celebrate their achievements.
• Promote reading for pleasure and functional literacy throughout the prison environment.
• Collaborate with prison staff, learning support practitioners, and employability teams to provide holistic support.

Required profile

• A Level 3 qualification in English.
• Teaching qualification (Level 5 such as PGCE, Cert Ed, DTLLS) preferred, or relevant sector experience with willingness to work towards qualification.
• Proven experience delivering Functional Skills English qualifications.
• Strong classroom management, lesson planning and learner engagement abilities.
• Excellent administrative and communication skills.
• Desirable: experience in prison education, further education or adult learning settings.

• Salary from £30,000 plus £5,000 London weighting (≈£35,000 per annum).
