Gas Design Manager

About the role

The Gas Design Manager will lead the design of gas distribution projects from initial site surveys through to the production of detailed construction drawings. Working closely with engineers, project teams and external consultants, you will ensure designs meet industry standards, client expectations and health & safety regulations.

Key responsibilities

• Monitor industry best practices, recommend new design approaches and track emerging trends.
• Develop high‑quality design concepts, iterate with stakeholders and produce detailed technical drawings, plans and general arrangements.
• Manage all design phases, including project set‑up, programming, design, CDM documentation and STAT plan review.
• Conduct site visits and surveys to gather data for as‑laid drawings and detailed designs.
• Collaborate with internal and client design teams, external consultants, subcontractors and third‑party organisations to resolve issues.
• Produce weekly design reports and present updates to the Design Manager.
• Maintain the health & safety file throughout the project lifecycle and ensure CDM 2015 compliance.
• Support the construction team with design queries and guide designs through the client’s G17 governance process.

Required profile

• Engineering qualification or equivalent experience in the gas industry.
• Proven experience designing intermediate‑pressure and high‑pressure gas mains on high‑profile projects.
• Strong knowledge of IGEM standards and CDM 2015 regulations.
• Ability to manage multiple projects, mentor junior staff and work collaboratively.

Required skills

• Proficient use of AutoCAD for detailed drawing production.
• Competent in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook.
