General Building Operative – HMP Leeds

About the role

This temporary position supports the maintenance team at HMP Leeds, delivering a range of building and facilities tasks within a secure prison environment. The role offers the chance to gain experience in a unique setting and may lead to permanent employment based on performance.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out reactive repairs and damage restoration across the prison estate.
• Perform basic joinery work as required.
• Undertake minor plumbing tasks, such as unblocking toilets.
• Execute simple electrical duties, including replacing light bulbs.
• Conduct routine fire alarm testing to ensure compliance.
• Assist with waste management and disposal activities.
• Support ground maintenance to keep the environment clean and safe.
• Complete painting, decorating, and tiling projects.

Required profile

• Previous experience in a similar maintenance or construction role is desirable.
• Ability to obtain full prison security clearance and enhanced DBS.
• Valid passport or full birth certificate with photo driving licence at current address.
• Proof of National Insurance and recent proof of address.
• At least two satisfactory employment references.
