GP with Extended Role – Urgent Care Walk‑in Service

About the role

The NHS Borders Urgent Care Service is seeking a GP with Extended Role (GPwER) to deliver urgent medical care in a walk‑in centre at Hawick Community Hospital. This fixed‑term position runs until 31 March 2027 and offers flexible, integrated working across primary and secondary care settings.

Key responsibilities

• Provide medical advice, assessment and urgent treatment to walk‑in patients.
• Deliver urgent care services at Hawick Community Hospital, Borders General Hospital and other community sites as required.
• Collaborate with a multi‑disciplinary team of clinicians, nurses and administrative staff.
• Contribute to unscheduled care pathways and support the urgent care walk‑in service.
• Adhere to NHS clinical governance, safety and confidentiality standards.

Required profile

• Qualified General Practitioner registered with the GMC.
• Experience in urgent or primary care settings is desirable.
• Commitment to the NHS values of care, compassion, quality, teamwork, dignity, respect and openness.
• Eligibility to work in the United Kingdom and willingness to undergo required pre‑employment checks.

Required skills

• Clinical assessment and decision‑making in urgent care.
• Effective communication with patients and multidisciplinary teams.
• Knowledge of NHS policies, including PVG Scheme and criminal records checks.
