Group Accountant (Revenue & Capital)

About the role

East Herts Council is seeking an enthusiastic, self‑motivated Group Accountant to join its Finance Team on a one‑year fixed‑term contract. You will support the Assistant Director for Finance and the Director of Finance by delivering accurate revenue and capital reporting and ensuring strong financial governance.

Key responsibilities

• Lead a small team in producing high‑quality revenue and capital monitoring reports.
• Prepare quarterly monitoring reports for the Strategic Leadership Team and Councillors.
• Respond to enquiries from budget holders and directors, offering strategic advice on budgeting, forecasting and year‑end processes.
• Promote robust financial governance and share best practice on legislative and guidance changes.
• Identify and support initiatives that transform service delivery and drive continuous improvement across the Council.

Required profile

• CCAB qualification or equivalent experience with solid knowledge of relevant legislation.
• Excellent organisational skills with the ability to prioritise work and meet deadlines.
• Experience working in a busy finance team and a flexible, proactive approach to new ideas.
• Strong communication skills, able to summarise and convey complex information clearly.
• Passion for working in local government.
