Head Nurse (RVN) – Lead Veterinary Nursing Team

About the role

This full‑time Head Nurse position leads the nursing team at Mercer & Hughes' hub practice in Saffron Walden. Reporting to the Clinical Director and Practice Manager, you will drive clinical standards and enhance client care across a busy first‑opinion hub.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and manage a multidisciplinary nursing team including Registered Veterinary Nurses, student nurses and patient care assistants.
• Develop and maintain high‑quality, evidence‑based nursing protocols from consulting rooms to the operating theatre.
• Mentor and support staff, fostering a positive, collaborative culture.
• Work with the Clinical Director to improve clinical standards and patient outcomes.
• Participate in quarterly Leadership Meetings to shape group‑wide clinical and operational strategy.

Required profile

• Qualified Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) with proven leadership or mentoring experience.
• Strong relationship‑building skills with colleagues and clients.
• Commitment to continuous professional development and high standards of patient care.

Required skills

• Experience with orthopaedic and laparoscopic surgery assistance.
• Proficiency in advanced diagnostic procedures.
• Knowledge of inpatient care management.
