Head of Commercial & Operations (MD) – Drainage, Groundworks & Utilities

About the role

We are seeking a hands‑on Head of Commercial & Operations (MD) to lead a well‑established SME specialising in drainage, groundworks and utilities. You will inherit a loyal customer base, an experienced workforce and strong profit foundations, and you will be responsible for steering the business into its next growth phase.

Key responsibilities

• Define and execute the strategic direction of the business, working closely with the Chairman and Board.
• Oversee day‑to‑day operations, including site challenges, equipment, logistics and health & safety compliance.
• Lead and develop the Operations Manager, Sales Manager and Executive Assistant.
• Drive commercial growth, diversify service offerings and expand market reach across London and the South East.
• Maintain and strengthen relationships with existing customers while pursuing new business opportunities.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in drainage, utilities, groundworks, civil engineering, construction or related infrastructure services.
• Previous senior roles such as Operations Director, Commercial Director, Regional Director, Business Unit Director, General Manager or Divisional Director.
• Proven ability to earn the respect of field crews and lead from the front.
• Strong commercial mindset with a track record of growing profitable SMEs.
