Head of Compliance

About the role

We are partnering with a boutique Independent Financial Adviser (IFA) firm to find an experienced Head of Compliance. This senior leader will hold the SMF16 (Compliance Oversight) and SMF17 (Money Laundering Reporting Officer) functions, embedding a pragmatic, business‑focused compliance culture while safeguarding regulatory standards.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare and present Consumer Duty annual reports.
• Produce AML annual reports and act as the MLRO.
• Design and deliver risk‑based compliance monitoring programmes.
• Conduct advice file reviews, provide feedback and manage complaints.
• Complete and submit RMAR returns.
• Develop, implement and continuously improve compliance policies, procedures and controls.
• Maintain accurate regulatory records and management information.
• Make and document Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs).
• Support GDPR compliance and data governance.

Required profile

• Minimum five years of SMF16 and/or SMF17 experience within a well‑established IFA firm.
• Proven track record of building compliance frameworks that enable commercial growth.
• Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning or equivalent, plus relevant compliance qualifications.
• Ongoing CPD with regular engagement in FCA publications and industry forums.

Required skills

• Strong knowledge of FCA Handbook requirements.
• Expertise in Consumer Duty, AML regulations, financial promotions and complaints handling.
• Understanding of GDPR and data protection.
• Experience with compliance technology and systems to improve oversight and reporting.
