Head of Design

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Design Leader to head the Design & CAD function of a respected engineering business delivering structural solutions across the UK and internationally. Reporting to the senior technical leadership team, you will shape technical direction, develop the design team and contribute to future senior leadership.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and develop the Design & CAD team, managing workload planning and quality control.
• Oversee production of 2D and 3D CAD drawings and engineering documentation.
• Support structural design, engineering assessments and review calculations, drawings and technical documents.
• Ensure compliance with UK and European standards, including Eurocodes and British Standards.
• Collaborate with manufacturing, procurement, project and operations teams.
• Drive continuous improvement of design processes and department performance.
• Contribute to product development and innovation initiatives.

Required profile

• Degree in Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering or related discipline.
• Strong understanding of structural analysis and steel design principles.
• Experience in steel fabrication, manufacturing, construction or similar engineering environments.
• Previous leadership, management or mentoring experience within a design function.
• Excellent communication, organisational and problem‑solving abilities.
• Commercial awareness and ability to work in a fast‑paced environment.
• Chartered Engineer status (or working towards) is desirable.

Required skills

• Proficiency with 2D CAD software.
• Proficiency with 3D CAD software.
• Knowledge of Eurocodes and British Standards.
• Project management experience.
