Head of English Department – Independent School

About the role

We are seeking an ambitious and inspirational Head of English to lead the English department at a highly regarded independent school in the Maidstone area. This permanent position offers the chance to shape curriculum, drive achievement and mentor staff while fostering a love of literature and language among students.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and develop the English curriculum across KS3, KS4 and KS5.
• Ensure high standards of teaching, learning and assessment.
• Support and mentor teaching staff, promoting professional development.
• Analyse student outcomes and implement strategies to raise attainment.
• Collaborate with senior leadership to align department goals with the school’s ethos.

Required profile

• Qualified English teacher (QTS or equivalent) with strong classroom experience.
• Proven experience in leading or contributing to the development of an English department.
• Confidence teaching across KS3‑KS5, ideally including KS5.
• Excellent understanding of curriculum planning, assessment and data‑driven improvement.
• Inspirational leadership style with the ability to motivate colleagues.
