Head of English – Secondary School Leadership

About the role

We are seeking an inspirational Head of English to lead our secondary school department in Harlow. You will shape the vision, curriculum and culture of English teaching, driving excellence for students aged 11‑16.

Key responsibilities

• Lead, manage and develop the English department, ensuring high standards of teaching and learning.
• Plan and deliver engaging KS3 and KS4 English lessons while maintaining an outstanding classroom presence.
• Coach, mentor and support staff, fostering professional development and best‑practice sharing.
• Analyse student data to monitor progress, raise attainment and inform strategic improvements.
• Oversee curriculum planning, assessment strategies and departmental development aligned with school priorities.
• Collaborate with senior leaders on school‑wide initiatives and strategic planning.
• Lead intervention programmes, enrichment activities and extracurricular clubs that promote a love of literature.

Required profile

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is essential.
• A degree in English or a closely related subject.
• Proven experience teaching English across KS3 and KS4 in a secondary setting.
• Previous middle‑leadership experience or demonstrable ambition to step into a Head of Department role.
• Track record of raising attainment and improving outcomes in English.
