Head of English – Secondary School Leadership

About the role

The school is seeking an experienced Head of English to lead its English department across Key Stages 3, 4 and 5. This permanent, full‑time position starts in September and offers the chance to shape curriculum, drive attainment and inspire both students and staff.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and manage the English department, ensuring high standards of teaching and learning.
• Develop and implement a strategic vision for English across all key stages.
• Monitor student progress and introduce effective intervention strategies.
• Coach, support and develop members of the English team.
• Drive improvements in attainment, progress and overall student outcomes.
• Oversee curriculum planning, assessment and quality assurance within the department.
• Contribute to whole‑school leadership initiatives and improvement planning.
• Promote a culture of excellence, inclusion and continuous improvement.

Required profile

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a degree in English or a closely related subject.
• Proven middle or senior leadership experience within an English department.
• Strong knowledge of the English curriculum and assessment frameworks.
• Evidence of continued professional development.
• Outstanding classroom practice with a track record of raising attainment.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal and leadership skills.
