Head of Finance

About the role

We are seeking an experienced and proactive Head of Finance to lead the finance function of IPSE, the UK’s leading membership organisation for freelancers and the self‑employed. This part‑time, hybrid role combines strategic financial leadership with hands‑on operational support.

Key responsibilities

• Lead financial planning, budgeting and forecasting, and maintain a rolling cash‑flow forecast.
• Produce monthly management accounts, board reports and detailed financial analysis for senior leadership.
• Monitor departmental budgets, investigate variances and drive improvements in financial performance.
• Own month‑end and year‑end close processes and ensure accurate accounting records in Xero.
• Prepare financial papers for Board meetings and present performance insights.
• Manage the annual audit process and act as the primary contact for external auditors.
• Ensure compliance with HMRC, Companies House, VAT and Corporation Tax requirements.
• Oversee the outsourced payroll provider and workplace pension administration.

Required profile

• Proven experience in senior finance roles within a complex organisation.
• Strong analytical ability with confidence presenting financial insights to senior leaders.
• Hands‑on approach to solving operational finance challenges.
• Excellent governance and internal‑control mindset.
