Head of Maintenance – Estates & Facilities

About the role

We are seeking a dynamic Head of Maintenance to lead the operational delivery of hard facilities management across a large, multi‑use university campus in South London. This senior, hands‑on position combines technical expertise, contractor oversight, and strategic leadership to ensure the estate runs safely, efficiently and in full compliance with statutory requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Direct day‑to‑day maintenance activities across a complex estate, balancing planned and reactive work.
• Manage outsourced hard FM contracts, monitoring KPI/SLA performance and ensuring value for money.
• Maintain statutory compliance for all plant, systems and infrastructure, acting as the Responsible/Authorised Person for key disciplines.
• Oversee budgets, approve additional works and drive cost‑effective solutions.
• Lead health & safety, RAMS, audit processes and contractor control mechanisms.
• Use data and performance insights to continuously improve service quality and efficiency.
• Collaborate with senior stakeholders in estates, capital projects and compliance teams.

Required profile

• Degree‑qualified in Building Services, Engineering, Surveying or a related field.
• Extensive experience managing complex estates, preferably in healthcare, laboratory or similar environments.
• Proven track record of managing outsourced maintenance contracts.
• Strong knowledge of statutory compliance, health & safety and building services systems.
• Demonstrated ability to lead technical teams and manage budgets.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
