About the role

The Head of Operations will work closely with the Director and senior leadership team to steer the day‑to‑day business functions of a prestigious social‑science research centre within a leading UK university. This senior position blends strategic planning with hands‑on delivery, ensuring the centre can meet its ambitious research and impact goals.

Key responsibilities

• Lead operational management, streamlining business processes to maximise efficiency.
• Develop and execute operational strategies that align with long‑term objectives.
• Oversee financial planning, budgeting, forecasting and resource allocation.
• Ensure compliance with university policies, funding requirements and regulatory frameworks.
• Manage governance processes, reporting cycles and committee activities.
• Lead, develop and inspire professional services staff, fostering an inclusive high‑performance culture.
• Support grant management and research funding activities in partnership with academic colleagues.
• Drive continuous‑improvement initiatives across systems and working practices.
• Maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including funding bodies and partners.
• Identify operational risks and implement mitigation strategies.
• Contribute to strategic projects, organisational change and business planning.

Required profile

• Significant senior experience in operational, business management or professional services leadership.
• Proven track record of managing budgets, financial planning and resource allocation.
• Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate and develop multidisciplinary teams.
• Strong project‑management and organisational skills with the capacity to juggle competing priorities.
• Experience in governance, compliance and risk‑management processes.
• Excellent stakeholder‑management and influencing abilities.
• Background in higher education, research institutes or grant‑funded environments.
