Head of Payroll

About the role

We are seeking a Head of Payroll to lead the payroll function for a large healthcare organisation in South East London. Reporting to senior finance, you will ensure accurate, timely and compliant payroll processing for over 3,000 employees.

Key responsibilities

• Supervise end‑to‑end payroll across all entities, overseeing imports, exports, pay elements and system maintenance.
• Guarantee payrolls are processed accurately, on time and in line with company policy and UK legislation.
• Maintain complete audit trails and secure payroll data.
• Review payroll calculations, including gross and net wages, statutory payments, pension deductions and reconciliations.
• Stay up‑to‑date with HMRC regulations, PAYE, NI, SSP, SMP, SPP, Shared Parental Leave, auto‑enrolment, RTI and related legislation.
• Oversee statutory submissions such as FPS, EPS, PAYE payments, P45, P60, P11D and year‑end processes.
• Collaborate with Finance, HR, Operations, IT and external providers to continuously improve payroll systems and processes.
• Lead and develop a team of three payroll officers.

Required profile

• Extensive experience managing payroll in the UK, preferably within a large, regulated environment.
• Strong knowledge of UK payroll legislation and HMRC reporting requirements.
• Proven people‑management skills, with experience leading a payroll team.
• Excellent attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate audit records.

Required skills

• Sage Payroll (or equivalent payroll software)
