Head of Payroll – Lead In‑House Payroll Function

About the role

We are partnering with a well‑established multi‑site consumer business to appoint its first Head of Payroll. Reporting to the Finance Director and dotted‑line to the Head of HR, you will own the payroll strategy and drive the transition from an outsourced model to a fully in‑house function.

Key responsibilities

• Take full ownership of end‑to‑end payroll for ~200 employees, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
• Lead the migration from an external provider to an internal payroll operation.
• Select, implement and configure a new payroll system in close collaboration with finance.
• Design and embed robust payroll processes, controls and governance frameworks.
• Provide expert advice on payroll legislation, HMRC compliance and best practice.
• Partner with Finance, HR and operational teams to ensure seamless payroll integration.
• Identify and deliver efficiency gains through automation and process optimisation.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with senior stakeholders, influencing decisions.

Required profile

• Significant end‑to‑end payroll experience, preferably within a mid‑size or larger organisation.
• Proven track record of establishing or transforming an in‑house payroll function.
• Strong understanding of UK payroll legislation and HMRC requirements.
• Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
• Strategic mindset with the ability to execute hands‑on tasks.

• Experience implementing payroll software solutions.
• Knowledge of payroll automation tools and process optimisation techniques.
