Higher Level Teaching Assistant – Sunderland Schools

About the role

Protocol Education is partnering with primary schools across Sunderland and nearby areas to provide experienced Higher Level Teaching Assistants (HLTAs) for the upcoming academic year. The role supports teachers in delivering high‑quality instruction and ensuring every pupil receives the help they need.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver planned lessons when the class teacher is absent.
• Support teaching and learning across multiple year groups.
• Lead small‑group interventions aimed at raising attainment.
• Collaborate closely with teachers to monitor and promote pupil progress.
• Encourage positive behaviour and active engagement in learning.
• Record and report pupil progress accurately.

Required profile

• HLTA qualification or equivalent classroom experience.
• Strong knowledge of the primary curriculum.
• Excellent communication and classroom management abilities.
• Flexible, proactive attitude and willingness to travel within Sunderland.
• Driving licence and vehicle access are advantageous but not mandatory.
• Enhanced DBS check (or willingness to obtain one) and subscription to the DBS Update Service.
