Highways Design Engineer

About the role

We are seeking a Highways Design Engineer to join our Highways Design team in Salford. You will work within the Civil Engineering department on the National Highways Scheme Delivery Framework, delivering designs, drawings and technical documentation to meet client specifications, budgets and timelines.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare preliminary and detailed highway designs in line with approved procedures for local and national authorities.
• Support the Senior Engineer by producing design schedules and health, safety and welfare contract documentation in accordance with CDM Regulations 2015.
• Create design drawings and associated documentation.
• Deliver technical and feasibility studies that satisfy client technical specifications.
• Assess risks, materials and costs, ensuring compliance with Kier and client guidelines, permits and safety requirements.
• Conduct on‑site investigations and analyse data such as maps, reports, tests and drawings.
• Contribute innovative solutions, adhere to Kier’s SHEMS and KDTS IMS, set delivery targets and report progress.
• Oversee and mentor junior staff while maintaining strong client and authority relationships.

Required profile

• Proven experience in highways design and civil engineering projects.
• Familiarity with Construction, Design & Management Regulations 2015.
• Ability to produce detailed design documentation and technical studies.
• Strong analytical skills for risk, material and cost assessment.
• Experience mentoring junior engineers and liaising with clients and authorities.

Required skills

• Knowledge of CDM Regulations 2015.
• Understanding of Kier’s SHEMS (Safety, Health, Environment Management System).
• Familiarity with Kier’s KDTS IMS (Integrated Management System).
