Hospital Porter – Patient Transport & Logistics

About the role

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is seeking confident and friendly individuals to join the Portering team. As a Porter you will play a vital role in ensuring safe and efficient movement of patients, specimens, equipment and other items across Southampton General Hospital, supporting clinical teams around the clock.

Key responsibilities

• Transport patients between wards, operating theatres, the Emergency Department and the helipad, maintaining a courteous and caring manner.
• Move laboratory specimens, blood products and other clinical items promptly and securely.
• Assist the major‑trauma team by retrieving and transferring patients from the helipad to appropriate locations.
• Remove deceased patients from wards to the mortuary or holding area, ensuring proper hand‑over of case notes.
• Provide general portering duties such as moving equipment, linen and supplies as required.

Required profile

• Good standard of literacy and numeracy.
• Ability to work flexibly across day, night, early and twilight shifts, seven days a week.
• Friendly, helpful and professional attitude when dealing with patients, visitors and staff.
• Physical fitness to handle manual handling tasks safely.

Required skills

• Basic computer literacy.
