Household Waste Recycling Centre Team Leader

About the role

Lead the way in sustainability by managing one of Staffordshire’s household waste recycling centres. You will ensure safe, compliant operations while inspiring a dedicated team to deliver excellent customer service and drive the council’s recycling ambitions.

Key responsibilities

• Operate the household waste recycling centre safely and in line with environmental permits, health & safety standards and council procedures.
• Lead, supervise and motivate the site team, manage absences, allocate daily tasks and ensure high levels of customer service.
• Monitor waste volumes, container levels and stock, coordinating with contractors to maintain capacity.
• Enforce traffic management, permit policies and safe behaviours for staff, contractors and visitors.
• Maintain accurate records, complete duty of care documentation, waste transfer notes and incident reports.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in waste management and recycling operations, with strong knowledge of environmental responsibilities and regulatory compliance.
• Proven ability to lead, supervise and support teams to achieve high performance, safety and productivity.
• Excellent customer‑service orientation and communication skills.
• Flexibility to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including weekends and bank holidays, and travel between sites as needed.

Required skills

• Operate site machinery and equipment safely, performing routine inspections and daily checks.
• Conduct equipment maintenance and safety checks to ensure efficient operation.
