Independent Reviewing Officer & Child Protection Conference Chair

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Social Worker to act as an Independent Reviewing Officer and Chair Child Protection Conferences for Sandwell Children’s Services in Oldbury. This hybrid, full‑time locum position provides independent oversight of care planning and safeguarding decisions for children in care and those on child protection plans.

Key responsibilities

• Chair Child Protection Conferences and Looked‑After Children reviews.
• Provide robust challenge and independent oversight of care planning and decision‑making.
• Ensure reviews are child‑focused, timely and comply with statutory guidance.
• Uphold children’s rights and promote best outcomes while maintaining independence.
• Monitor performance, flag drift or delays and escalate concerns.
• Collaborate with internal teams and partner agencies.
• Contribute to service development and quality assurance.

Required profile

• Qualified Social Worker registered with Social Work England.
• Previous experience as an Independent Reviewing Officer and/or Child Protection Conference Chair.
• Strong knowledge of Working Together to Safeguard Children and the IRO Handbook.
• Ability to chair complex meetings and manage sensitive discussions.
• Enhanced DBS check on the Update Service.

• Effective meeting facilitation and decision‑making skills.
