Interim Lead for Dorset Local Plan

About the role

The Dorset Council is seeking an Interim Lead to drive the delivery of its new Local Plan and accompanying Design Guide. This senior position will manage the Spatial Planning Manager and a team of 50, reporting to both the Corporate Director for Planning and the Executive Director for Economy and Environment. The role starts immediately and is expected to run for at least six months.

Key responsibilities

• Establish a critical‑path timetable and robust project‑management framework for the new Local Plan.
• Lead the Spatial Planning Team and ensure resources are aligned with the primary objective of producing the Local Plan.
• Drive progress on the Design Guide for Dorset, coordinating with senior stakeholders.
• Maintain close working relationships with the Cabinet Member for Planning, council committees and the Executive Director, managing your diary to maximise face‑to‑face interaction.
• Influence senior decision‑makers and elected members, navigating the political context at regional and local levels.

Required profile

• Significant senior experience in strategic planning, with a proven record of delivering and adopting Local Plans.
• Demonstrated ability to engage, guide and influence senior statutory officers on complex planning and transport issues.
• Experience leading large multidisciplinary teams and motivating partners to achieve high‑quality outcomes with limited resources.
• Strong political awareness and the capacity to work constructively with elected members.
