Interim Payroll Manager (3‑month contract)

About the role

This interim position supports a leading education institute in Glasgow while the permanent payroll manager is on medical leave. The role is office‑based for at least two days a week and reports to the Head of Finance. It is expected to run for approximately three months, with the possibility of extension.

Key responsibilities

• Process monthly payroll for around 1,600 staff and fee‑paid contracts using BACS.
• Prepare and input payroll data, ensuring accurate records and statutory returns.
• Reconcile net salaries, PAYE, NI, pensions and related accounts with the nominal ledger.
• Oversee onboarding and off‑boarding of employees, supervising a payroll assistant.
• Manage payroll system upgrades and liaise with external providers.
• Respond to payroll queries from staff and external agencies.
• Produce departmental payroll analysis and ad‑hoc statutory reports.

Required profile

• Minimum 5 years’ experience in senior payroll or payroll management within the UK.
• Ability to start at short notice and work with minimal supervision.
• Self‑motivated, proactive and comfortable handling confidential information.
• Eligible to work unrestricted in the UK and based near Glasgow.
