Java & Serverless API Engineer

About the role

Aflac’s Northern Ireland engineering team is building AI‑enabled, serverless solutions that power policyholder experiences and core insurance capabilities. The role focuses on Java Spring Boot development and AWS Lambda‑based microservices, working in an Agile environment to deliver scalable APIs and intelligent features.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement Java APIs and serverless functions using Spring Boot, AWS Lambda and API Gateway.
• Integrate AI/ML services such as Amazon Bedrock, SageMaker and OpenAI APIs to add intelligent capabilities.
• Build event‑driven architectures with Kafka/MSK, AWS EventBridge, SQS and SNS for real‑time communication.
• Write comprehensive unit, integration and AI model validation tests following TDD practices.
• Develop Infrastructure as Code using CloudFormation, CDK or Terraform and maintain CI/CD pipelines.
• Collaborate daily with Agile team members, contributing to stand‑ups and sprint planning.

Required profile

• 3+ years of professional Java development experience with microservices and cloud‑native design.
• Hands‑on interest or experience with serverless technologies, preferably AWS Lambda.
• Understanding of AI/ML concepts and enthusiasm for integrating intelligent services.
• Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related field, or equivalent experience.
• Must be based in Northern Ireland with the right to work in the UK.
