Junior Welfare Dean – Student Welfare Support

About the role

The Junior Welfare Dean supports the Head of Wellbeing in delivering welfare services to students at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford. The role is primarily front‑line, covering evenings, nights and weekends throughout term and the Easter vacation, and involves responding promptly to health, safety and welfare incidents.

Key responsibilities

• Provide immediate assistance for minor emergencies, illness, urgent welfare issues and safety calls outside normal working hours.
• Deliver crisis support to students, including arranging hospital transport, staying with patients and coordinating with the College Nurse.
• Attend weekly hand‑over meetings with the Head of Wellbeing and the Nurse, and participate in the Wellbeing Forum.
• Collaborate with Lodge staff to manage disruptive behaviour and ensure events end orderly.
• Act as a qualified first‑aid responder and, when required, serve as an invigilator for examination emergencies.

Required profile

• Enrolled full‑time in a graduate research or medical programme at the University of Oxford for the whole appointment.
• Excellent communication, discretion and the ability to build confidence with undergraduate and graduate students.
• Resilient, mature judgement and the capacity to act independently in unpredictable situations.
• Willingness to work unsociable hours, including evenings and weekends, and to attend meetings during term time.

Required skills

• Valid First Aid at Work certification or willingness to obtain it before starting.
• Completion of the mandatory 24‑hour welfare training course.
